Question

Assalamu aleykum. I was wondering if you could answer this question in regards to religion. Because I can’t find any concrete answers online. Is it haram to get temporary hyaluronic lip fillers? I’m turning 19 and I wanted to get them for my birthday because I think they look very pretty and would make me happy. But I don’t know if it’s haram or not. I know that permanent changes are haram, but I wanted temporary hyaluronic fillers which are completely absorbed by the body after a few months. So I don’t know if it’s haram or not and I don’t want to get fillers without knowing.

Answer

Minor temporary changes which only impact the external appearance of a person are permissible. This would include the use of hena, makeup, etc.

As for procedures which are invasive and not done for medical reasons, they will not be permissible. This will include lip fillers regardless of whether or not they are permanent. Hence, in response to your question it would not be permissible to use such lip fillers.

As for permanent changes to the body, regardless of whether they are internal or external changes these will not be permissible, except where the shari’ah has permitted such as ear piercings and correcting bodily deformities. The reason for this is that the shari’ah has generally prohibited the modification of the human body.

Islam places a lot of emphasis on being content with the decree of Allah the Almighty. He has created every person different based on His will and it is part of our test to align our happiness with what Allah the Almighty has decreed for us. This includes the way in which we look. Hence, we should focus our attention of being happy with the decree of Allah the Almighty, rather than trying to modify our appearance.
