Assalamalaikum
Wanted to know on zakat
We have our mother few jewelry kept from almost three years after she passed away we are eight brothers and sisters please advise if we need to take zakat on that jewelry
Thank you
Answer
Firstly, zakat is only paid on gold and silver jewellery. If the jewellery is not gold or silver then zakat will not have to be paid. If the jewellery was gold or silver then the following will apply:
If the inheritance along with the jewellery has been distributed and each individual has been given access to their share of inheritance then each individual will give zakat according to their own situation. For example, if two pieces of jewellery came in to your share of inheritance then you would pay zakat on the pieces that are yours along with your other zakatable assets.
If however the inheritance has not been distributed and each inheritor does not know what their share is and do not know what they own from the estate, then zakat will not be payable on the jewellery.
