Question
Ive been on a contraceptive pill to make menstrual pain less but when you take a 4 or 7 days break for a ‘period’ it is actually called a withdrawal bleed because a egg hasn’t released, in a real period which would make a women come on her period if the egg didn’t get conceived so then the uterus lining sheds to get rid, in the same way a withdrawal bleed sheds the uterus lining because a drop in hormones ( the same as real period) which causes bleeding but from no egg. So i want to know if the withdrawal bleed from the pill istihada and if we still have pray on it or is it still considered a period and have to stop reading salaah. JazkAllah
Answer
As per my understanding, withdrawal bleeding which occurs when you stop taking oral contraceptives originates from the uterus and exits through the vagina. Any bleeding that originates in the uterus and exits from the vagina may be considered menstruation in the eyes of the shari’ah if it occurs after a purity of at least 15 days and lasts for at least 3 days and nights (72 hours). Since the bleeding that you see appears to fulfil all these and other criteria for being considered menstruation, it will be considered menstruation and you will not be allowed to perform salah during it.
