Sending Picture Of Hair

Question

Salam

Hope you are well

My question is can I send a picture of a portion of my hair to a colorist in order to receive advice with regards to my grey hair. The portion will be the back of my head and mid-lengths of the hair. No part of my body, skin or shape will be taken. Just the hair. The colourist who will view the picture is not Muslim.

Context

I have been dying my hair at home using cheap products and have damaged it in the process. I need to show the colorist the current state and colour of my hair in order for he/she to prescribe a customized dye for my hair. The picture will be seen when the colourist logs into my colour history under my profile. The profile includes answers to some general questions. There is also a section where I can describe my current hair state in words. Using all the information provided, they can then send a customized dye. The company website is below

https://www.esalon.co.uk/

I do not wish to send a picture of my face. I want to avoid hair salons too.

My intent behind this is not really beautification. I feel a real need to cover my grey hair. I am 28, married and about 50% of my hair is grey. The rest of the hair is different shades of gold/brown. I want the colourist to prescribe a dye and treatment to bring my hair back to my natural hair colour.

I hope I have explained this well. JazakAllah for your time.

Answer

A woman’s hair is part of her nakedness (‘awrah). For this reason it is not permissible for a woman to show or send pictures of her hair to a non-mahram. The jurists have also mentioned that it is not permissible for a woman to expose herself in front of a non-Muslim woman. Therefore, a woman would only be permitted to show her hair to men who are her mahram or Muslim women.

In certain cases, such as where there is a medical need, there is some discretion in uncovering the ‘awrah. In your case, if the matter is as you have said and 50% of your hair is grey despite only being 28, then as this is a clear abnormality and defect, it would be permissible for you to show samples of your hair to a female colourist even if she is non-Muslim. We would urge you to request that a female colourist deals with your situation or that at least the image is only seen by a female.
