السلام علیکم
I were having postpartum bleeding for almost 35 days. After that i started prayer but at 40th day bleeding started again. I am confuse either its post-partum bleeding or periods or isthaza.
This was my first pregnancy.
Please guide me regarding this matter.

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Inspirer of truth

The maximum number of days for post-partum bleeding (nifas) is 40 days and nights. For a woman who has no habit in nifas, she will consider all bleeding within these days as nifas even if there is a gap of purity in between.

In your situation, since you restarted bleeding on the 40th day and do not have any habit of nifas, you will count days 1-40 as your nifas. Bleeding after the 40th day will be istihada (irregular bleeding). If you continue to bleed, you will not count any coloured discharge or bleeding as hayd (menstruation) until the number of days totalling your purity habit has passed. You will need to refer to your bleeding history prior to your pregnancy to determine your purity and hayd habits.

Please note if you stop bleeding and do not see any coloured discharge for 15 days or more, then this will be considered a sufficient purity gap to separate between any two cycles of bleeding. In this case, you will not need to apply your purity and hayd habits.
