Question

People with diabetes are able to monitor their blood glucose levels continuously with continuous glucose monitoring devices. A sensor is placed on the upper arm which has small needles which pierce 1mm into the skin and monitor the glucose levels in the interstitial fluid, not blood directly. In doing so a small amount of interstitial fluid may come out of the skin too.
As bleeding breaks wudhu in the hanafi school, would using such a device also break wudhu?

Answer

According to our understanding of how glucose monitors work, such devices will usually not break wudu’. This is because any exiting interstitial fluid or blood will generally not be of such an amount that it will have flowed. However, if you generally see blood when removing the device, then out of caution you may perform a fresh wudu’ after the initial application of the device.
