Question
Assalāmu Alaikum
My question is as follows:
During November, Asr Salah time begins at 3:53 pm as per the Hanafi opinion and sunset is at 5:32 pm.
Would there be any dislike or considered undesirable if we performed Asr Salah at 4:50 pm and Maghrib begins in Half-hour after we have completed Asr Salah?
Jazakumullahu Khairan.
Answer
The disliked time before sunset starts from when the brightness of the sun fades to the extent that one is able to look directly at the sun without one’s sight becoming dazzled, right until the sun sets. The ʿasr salat needs to be performed before this. Delaying the ʿasr prayer until this time intentionally is not permissible. Some scholars have estimated this time to be around 20 – 30 minutes before sunset. However, this would depend on a number of factors such as the time of year, location etc. Hence, we would advise that the ʿasr prayer is performed before this time to avoid performing the ʿasr prayer in the disliked time.
