Question
“If someone vows to do an act of worship which is already ‘Fard or Wajib’ for him (e.g., zuhr prayer), his vow will not be valid and he is not required to do anything in this regard”-am I correct?
Answer
A vow (nadhr) to perform an obligatory (fard) or necessary (wajib) form of worship is invalid, and thus without consequence. Therefore, there is no expiation on such vows. It goes without saying that obligatory and necessary actions must be performed, otherwise one is sinful.
