Question

Assalamu alaikum,

I would be grateful if you could please clarify if the current covid vaccines that are available are all halal ?.

There are so many messages at the moment that are being forwarded amongst Muslims, which has created a great deal of uncertainty.

I would be grateful if you could help shed some light on the permissibiity of having a covid vaccine from a sharia perspective.

Jazak’Allah Khayran

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Inspirer of Truth

Currently, there are three Covid-19 vaccinations that have been approved by the UK Government: Pfizer BioNTech, Oxford-AstraZeneca and Moderna. The Government’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have confirmed there is no ingredient derived from human or animal origin in these vaccines.

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine contains a very small amount of alcohol (2 mg of alcohol (ethanol) per dose of 0.5 ml) (UK Gov Oxford-AstraZeneca). The alcohol content in the vaccine undergoes such a transformation during manufacture that in the final product it is not intoxicating. In addition to this, the alcohol is from vegetable sources and so its non-intoxicating negligible amount for medicinal purposes is permitted.

Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna are both mRNA vaccines and so they are synthetically produced from DNA templates and there are no foetal cells used in production.

The manufacturing process of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine involves the production of a virus, the adenovirus, which carries the genetic material to the cells inside the body. To produce this virus in the laboratory, a “host” cell line is needed. For some vaccines, chicken cells are used for this process, and for other human cell lines are used to produce the virus. The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine uses a cell line called HEK-293 cells. HEK-293 is the name given to a specific line of cells used in various scientific applications. The original cells were taken from the kidney of a legally aborted foetus in 1973. HEK-293 cells used nowadays are clones of those original cells but are not themselves the cells of the aborted foetus. (Taken from Oxford Vaccine Knowledge Point)

Considering none of the original cells remain in the final product of the vaccine the HEK-293 cell line has been reproduced multiple times since ridding it of any original impure cells, this vaccine is permissible to use. However, where possible one should opt for an alternative such BioNTech or Moderna.

And Allah knows best.
