Menses and Umrah

Question

Assalamu Alikum Warahmatullahi Wabarkatuhu

To Respected Mufti Saheb,

I am writing this to get some help on my menses situations and my recent trip to Umrah, Makkah.

My monthly menses cycle is of 18 to 19 days – This has been the Cycle since 2019.
(I usually get my period after this number of days).
My period lasts ONLY for up to 5 days and on some occasions 6 days. This has been the pattern since 2019.
Usually after my period, I do see a discharge of light colour which continues for the most part up to like 15 days.

Here is the situation:

19th Nov. – Period started (A Day before I was supposed to travel to Makkah)
20th Nov. – Reached Makkah and was in state of Ihram. (Remained in Ihram state for 5 days 23rd Nov.).
DID NOT SEE ANY BLOOD FOR 10 HOURS.
24th Nov. – I performed my Umrah and was all clear when I left. However, when I returned, I noticed the DISCOULOURED discharge but was a bit darker than my usual colour that I normally see on a regular basis. Upon seeing the discharge, I immediately assumed state of Ihram except that I had my hair cut done already before I saw this.
25th Nov. – I took Ghusl and waited and saw nothing again. I decided to pray and carry on with my usual activities. As soon as I came back after performing TAWAF, I noticed the DISCOULOURED discharge again. This pattern continued. I did ghusl every time, waited and carried on with my Tawaf.
26th Nov – I performed my Umrah again as I was in doubt and was all clear when I left. However, when I returned, I noticed the DISCOULOURED discharge again.
Throughout this time, I never felt discharge while I was performing Tawaf or any other act. I saw it once I returned to my room.

MY Question: WERE MY 2 UMRAHS and TAWAF, etc. valid? If not, what should be done? What amount of Sadqah/Damma to be given?

28th Nov. – Eventually it stopped as soon I reached Madinah. Things were normal.

I returned back again to Makkah.

4th Dec. – I did my Umrah – All clear up to 6th Dec.
7th Dec. – All clear and did my another Umrah. However, when I returned, I noticed the DISCOULOURED discharge again. (Was this Umrah Valid since it was less than even 15 days of menses?) I did Ghusl and continued my Tawaf and prayers because it was less than my 18-day menses cycle. I continued all acts of praying, Tawaf etc. up to 10th Dec.

10th Dec. – I was bleeding but did my another Umrah. (Was this Umrah Valid since it was less than even 18 days of my menses cycle?)

On 11th Dec. I stopped the prayers etc. as it would be the 18th day and keeping in mind my regular period cycle, it would be the day of arrival of my period. I left Makkah this day.
Throughout the journey and wait of 24 hours, I saw NOTHING except light coloured discharge which I usually see it on a regular basis. It has all disappeared completely now when actually it is my usual menses cycle time. My period has now started again on 15th Dec.

This has NEVER EVER happened to me in my life. This is the first time I am seeing my body and menses reacting in such a manner. Please tell me what needs to be done in terms of how much Sadqah/Damma to be given. I am completely clueless.

Jazakumullahu Khiaran in dvance.

Answer

The compulsory acts of ʿumrah are entering into the state of ihram and performing tawaf. If a woman performs these two rites her ʿumrah is complete. As you have completed both of these rites for both ʿumrah’s, they are both valid. However, if the tawaf was performed in the state of impurity, a compensation of a small animal will be due. If the tawaf is repeated in the state of purity the penalty is lifted.

If you did not feel any discharge exiting while performing tawaf, the discharge is considered to have exited upon seeing it, which was after the completion of tawaf and no penalty is due. This should help you to determine whether a penalty is due.

You mention towards the end of your question:

Throughout the journey and wait of 24 hours, I saw NOTHING except light coloured discharge which I usually see it on a regular basis.

You have mentioned instances where you have seen coloured discharge during your ʿumrah journey without mentioning any colour or whether this is discharge that you see on a regular basis. Discoloured yellow discharge before or after your menstruation is not menstruation if it is the same colour as regular discharge seen in days of purity.

If the discoloured discharge was different to your normal discharge, it will be considered part of your menstruation. However, the discharge has continued intermittently and the purity in between is less than 15 days. A purity of less than 15 days is considered continuous bleeding. In such scenarios a woman will refer back to her previous habit.
