Question

I understand we are commanded to love Arabs as part of our faith. However is an arab anyone who speaks arabic according to Ibn Taymiyyah and other scholars and thus we love arab speakers?

Answer

There are hadiths which mention that we should love and respect Arabs. Individually many of their chains are classified as weak (da’if), however, when gathered together their collective strength can provide a basis for having love and respect for the Arabs. In response to your question the hadiths usually refer to loving Arabs and their virtue, not necessarily the Arabic language. Hence, those people would be referred to in these hadiths whose lineage establishes them as Arabs.

For instance, the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) said:

“Love the Arabs for three reasons: Because I am an Arab, the Qur’an is in Arabic and the language of Jannah is Arabic”.

From this narration we see that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) is instructing us to love Arabs and one of the reasons is because the Prophet was an Arab. This is a matter of lineage and not just being able to speak Arabic. Yes, another reason to love the Arabs is because the language of Jannah is Arabic, however, the instruction is to love Arabs specifically not just those who speak Arabic.
