Question

Assalamu alaykum I wanted to if whilst in Makkah it’s permissible to look at the kaabah whilst praying or should one still keep the gaze on the place of sujood ?

Answer

It is from the etiquettes of salat that a person looks down at the place of sajdah when standing in salat. The jurists have stated that this will also be the case when standing in front of the ka’bah. The reason for looking down is to help a person concentrate in their salat and avoid distractions.

As looking down is an etiquette of salat and not a requirement, if one did look at the ka’bah they will not be sinful, though performing salat in this manner would not be the optimal method.

قوله لتحصيل الخشوع) علة للجميع لأن المقصود الخشوع وترك التكليف، فإذا تركه صار ناظرا إلى هذه المواضع قصد أو لا، وفي ذلك حفظ له عن النظر إلى ما يشغله، وفي إطلاقه شمول المشاهد للكعبة لأنه لا يأمن ما يلهيه، وإذا كان في الظلام أو كان بصيرا يحافظ على عظمة الله تعالى لأن المدار عليها، وتمامه في الإمداد وإذا كان المقصود الخشوع، فإذا كان في هذه المواضع ما ينافيه يعدل إلى ما يحصله فيها
