Question
As-salamu alaikum,
I understand that Qiraan in generally mention as the most virtuous iḥrām according to the Hanafi school. However, I was recently shown a quote from the Muwaṭṭaʾ of Imām Muahmmad where he states that if you have done Umrah in the year of your Hajj, Ifraad is preferred. I checked both Mulla Ali Qārī’s sharh and Abdul Hayy Lakhnawi’s and neither mentioned anything significant to comment on this. Additionally, I was told that Ibm Taymiyyah mentions in his manasik that all 4 Imams agree that ifrad is best if someone has preformed Umrah during the year. I have attached a picture of the quote from the Muwaṭṭaʾ of Imam Muhammad. Would it be correct to state that this is the opinion of the madhhab?
جزاكم الله خيرا
Answer
If we are looking at the position of the madhhab then performing qiran is more virtuous regardless of whether a person has performed ‘umrah or not that same year.
There is an opinion narrated from Imam Muhammad that if a person is faced with one of two options: either they perform ‘umrah and hajj separately in two separate journeys or they perform qiran in one journey, then in such a case it would be best for them to carry out two separate journeys.
If however, a person has the option to perform qiran then this would be better even if they have already performed ‘umrah that same year.
