A woman didn’t know that discharge breaks wudhu until a few years after she was baligh. She would also pray with the najasah of discharge on her clothing without realising that would invalidate salah.

Does she need to repeat those few years of salah?

Answer

There are two opinions in regards to the origin of vaginal discharge. One opinion is that it is vaginal mucus and is therefore pure. The more precautionary opinion is that vaginal discharge is impure as it is from the cervix and thus will invalidate wudu. It would be preferable to adopt the second view of impurity as it is not possible to determine where the discharge originates from. Therefore, she should estimate the number of prayers that she had prayed without renewing her wudu and repeat those prayers. Similarly, praying with impurity that covers an area the same size as a 50p coin or more will nullify the prayer. If she estimates that the discharge that she prayed with was more than this, she should repeat those prayers. This is the more precautionary approach and she will be rewarded for the prayers that she performs. However, if she finds this difficult, she has the discretion to forego making up the prayers performed with the assumption that the discharge is pure based on the first opinion.
